Visa and Borders in Zimbabwe.

We visited Zimbabwe in January 2015,during a complete trip
around Southern and Eastern Africa,
in October 2014 and May 2015.

When entering Zimbabwe, with a Spanish passport (or most of UE), there´s a Visa on Arrival.

Prices for Visa on arrival :

20 US$ Single entrance visa, 1 day.
30 US$ Single entrance visa, 30 days.
50 US$ Multiple entrance visa, 30 days
55 US$ Multiple entrance visa, 90 days

Complete information: www.zimimmigration.gov.zw

Usually, you pay in US$ (this is the currency in Zimbabwe now) but they also accept South Africa Rands.

If you want to visit Zimbabwe and Zambia, it´s better getting a KAZA VISA, very convenient if you have 30 days or less to visit... if it´s avalaible at the border post you are using (just a few right now ... keep on reading...)

NEW KAZA UNIVISA ... dual for Zimbabwe and Zambia

Since December 2014, new dual visa for Zimbabwe and Zambia (KAZA UNIVISA)

Price for Kaza Univisa: 50 US$ for 30 days, multiple entrances, as long as you remain within Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Possible to buy 3 visas a year, if needed. Citizens who can get a Visa on arrival in both Zambia and Zimbabwe are eligible to get a Kaza visa.

At the moment (January 2015) only avalaible at

ZIMBABWE:
  • Victoria Falls, bridge and airport.
  • Kazangula (Botswana border)
  • Harare airport
ZAMBIA :
  • Livingstone (Victoria falls), bridge and airport
  • Kazangula (Botswana border
  • Lusaka airport.

This is the bad point, the limited border posts where you can get it!
Not avalaible yet at Beitbridge (South Africa) or if coming from Mozambique or if entering to Zambia from Tanzania or Malawi. But just in case things change, ask!

Zimbabwe border posts:

Check the opening time online for last updates, not all are open 24 hours... if travelling at night...
Zimbabwe has borders with South Africa (only Beitbridge), Botswana (between Bulawayo-Francistown and near Vic Falls), Zambia (Vic Falls-Livingstone, Kariba-Siavonga, Chirundu) and Mozambique (Mutare, Nyampanda).

The only border between Zimbabwe and South Africa at Beitbridge can get very crowded. It took us 4 hours to cross the border, beginning of january, after Christmas. Long queues. No problems with papers or officers, easy. We got our visa on arrival at the Zimbabwe Beitbridge post (paid in US$).
Chirundu (Zambia) also seems to get crowded, many trucks.

Crossing to Zimbabwe with a car: quite expensive!

You will need to fill papers and pay a quite big amount of money and don´t forget your triangles, extinguisher...
You have to obtain a Temporary Import Permit at the border post, pay for Road Access Fee, Carbon Tax and a compulsory 3rd Party Insurance (even if you have your own insurance).
Total costs depend on the engine size of your vehicle, if sedan or 4x4, but range from about 50$ to 150$.
It seems that there´s also an exit tax (around 10 $).

With a rental car, usually most of the companies allow you to go only to Victoria Falls area, no further. Enquire well first.
That´s why we travelled by public transport in Zimbabwe.
