BORDER SOUTH AFRICA - BOTSWANA AT MARTIN´S DRIFT-GLOBLERSBURG
We crossed the border in October 2014. You can see the complete information about this border in the specific chapter (menu in the right side).
FROM MARTIN´S DRIFT TO MAUN
700 km from the border to Maun. All tarred
roads, good, except the first km next to the border and arriving to Maun. Drive
carefully as lots of cattle around.
Not too
many interesting things on this route. We did it in 2 days, with an overnight in the middle.
Some houses
and small villages on the sides of the road, real Africa.
Empty country, just a few towns on the way (Palapye, Serowe, Lethakane, Rakops).
Keep it in mind for petrol, supermarkets, accommodation, etc., when
planning your route.
WHERE TO SLEEP ON THE ROUTE - CAMPING
Looking for cheap acomodation, we did a night in LETHAKANE (small town with gas station and supermarket). It´s a mining zone, with diamond
mines in Lethakane and Orapa (you see nothing, just artificial hills).
We slept in Tuuthebe
Lodge&campsite (3 km
passing Lethakane on the road to Orapa)
Price for Camping site: 80
P /pp (7€). Also rooms (expensive).
Free wifi. New, very clean.
Note: only
campsite in the area, also a few motels around Lethakane.
Other cheap
accommodation (with campsite) on the Martin´s Drift to Maun route:
- Palapye: Itumela Camp (camping around 75P/pp).
- Palapye to Serowe: Masama Lodge (camping around 65P/pp).
- North of Serowe: Khama rhino Sanctuary. Camping 85P/pp. Fee: 65P/pp+80P/car. Private reserve with rhinos. We saw many groups there when passing. Check their website.
- Rakops (north): Rakops River Lodge (camping around 80P/pp).
